Halloween, Who-Dey, and Podcasting

Mood: alert
Listening to: yesterday’s sermon at church via podcast
Eating: chinese food

Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone! Please check out the BooCast, which I posted last Friday morning. It’s got some Halloween stuff in it – some treats and maybe some tricks (you’ll have to listen), too!

Who-Dey!

Congratulations to the Cincinnati Bengals on their win over the Green Bay Packers yesterday (sorry Jon! I’m not sure whether there was a 300-pound man in a Packers uniform or not.). The game was interesting not only in their 21-14 win but also a visit to the field by a fan, who yanked the ball from Bret Favre’s clutches before being tackled by security guards. In related news, this fan has been signed to the Cleveland Browns. (just kidding)

Podcasting Update

The next podcast will have jazz music. I’ve already selected the music; I just need to queue up the tracks and get the recording done. If you’d like to comment on the Journey Inside My Mind podcast, please head over to http://jimmpodcast.blogspot.com and leave a comment, or you can call the Listener Hotline: (206) 666-JIMM (5466).

JIMM 16 – The Cheryl Dawson Memorial Walk-a-thon

Play

This post will remain at the top for the duration of October, for Domestic Violence Awareness month – DAJ (originally posted 200510040312)

Mood: contemplative

JIMM 16 (36:01, 32.9 MB) is a soundscape soundseeing podcast taken from audio recorded on Sunday, September 25, 2005. On that day members of the Cincinnati church of Christ, as well as others in the community, participated in the One Voice Cheryl Dawson Memorial Walk-a-thon One Voice Walk to help victims of domestic abuse and raise awareness of domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, so this event was aptly timed:

Cheryl Dawson was stabbed to death outside her workplace in March of 2002 by her estranged husband. She was a member of the Cincinnati church of Christ. (related post from March 2002: “One More Angel in Heaven“)

In my research for this podcast, I browsed over to the YWCA Greater Cincinnati website and discovered that they have an Art Gallery, where this month they have a special exhibit going on this month entitled “Empty Chairs, Painful Windows”. I mention more about it in the podcast.

Please, if you live in or close to the Cincinnati area, make time to visit this exhibit. The Y is located at the corner of Walnut and 9th Streets, across from the public library, in downtown Cincinnati. This past Saturday my wife, my daughter, and I visited the gallery ourselves. It was truly a moving experience.

Thanks go out to everyone who lent their voices to this podcast, including but not limited to, Brad, Mike, Jay, Tom, Betsy, my Mom, and many others.

Songs played:

  1. “Meant to Be” – Rob Costlow
    RobCostlow.com
  2. “I Do” – Rob Costlow
    RobCostlow.com
  3. “Glory, Glory” – Cincinnati church of Christ congregation
  4. “Family” – Rob Costlow
    RobCostlow.com
  5. “How I Got Over” – Cincinnati church of Christ choir
  6. “Not Alone” – Rob Costlow
    RobCostlow.com
  7. “Did You Think” – Adrina Thorpe
Read the lyrics to “Did You Think”!

As I’ve listened to this podcast several times myself over the past few days, I’m struck by how well the music goes with everything you hear from the individual audio clips.

October 7, 2005 update: Thanks to Jon from the Tanfastic podcast for playing the promo for this show!

August 14, 2007 update: Updated the link to the YWCA gallery exhibit “Empty Chairs, Painful Windows”

As always thanks go out to the folks who help make this possible:

  • Audacity, a bit unstable at times, but it gets the job done. Just remember to save early and often!
  • podsafe music network
  • OurMedia.org and their partnership with the Internet Archive
  • Anyone else I may have left out

Please call the Listener Hotline (206-666-JIMM), leave me a comment (guidepost), or send me an e-mail to let me know what you think!

Eating: hey! I’m hungry!

I’ve been doing some maintenance on the blogroll and the RSS feeds I’ve subscribed to in Bloglines. There have been so many on this list that I don’t read or haven’t read in such a long time.

Gotta get the next podcast done, hopefully tonight. I’ll have some Halloween music in it, among other things.

U-Turn Cafe Plays Requests

Mood: great
Listening to: U-Turn Cafe podcast, show # 3, with C.C. Chapman

Thank God that the sun came out! After nearly an entire week of gray, overcast, cold, and rainy weather, the sky is mostly sunny and blue! Awesome! I much rather the sky to be blue than I.

I’m listening to C.C. Chapman’s U-Turn Cafe, a podcast of mellow, chilled, podsafe acoustic music. I sent him an e-mail last week, requesting him to play Aaron Wilkinson‘s song “Last to Know”, after hearing it on the Tanfastic Podcast. Guess what? He’s playing it! Thanks, C.C.!

Driving Podsafely

Mood: not quite as down as earlier today; pretty positive, actually
Listening to: podcasts and music from the Podsafe Music Network
Reading: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Eating: pork steak, sauerkraut with potatoes, water

Tonight after dinner Keisha and I drove up to the hhgregg store to look at some personal audio and electronic items. Earlier today, I was browsing their website, along with some others, for a better media player. I’ve also been in the market for a car stereo cassette adapter, so that I wouldn’t have to wear headphones while listening to podcasts and podsafe music driving to and from work.

I priced some of their portable media players and bought one of those adapters. When we got home, I read another chapter of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to Keisha before tucking her in bed.

Jennie had woken up to go to work, and I decided to fill up my 64 MB Novad media player with some podsafe tunes, some podcast promos, a short podcast from a local FM station, some JIMM sweepers used in making the JIMM podcast, and JIMM 10 – ‘Getting Real’ (Jennie), which she and I did together at the beginning of September. It wound up being about an hour and a half’s worth of music, that she could listen to on the way to work and as she works tonight.

As Jennie finished getting ready, I went to our car to test out the adapter with the media player. It sounded pretty good. I almost regret that I’ll be working from home tomorrow and Thursday and not have the opportunity to listen during my hour-long commute.
