TV Volume Poltergeist

Mood: happy and tired
Listening to: Keisha getting ready for bed
Eating: leftover LaRosa’s pizza
Watching: 1st half of Glory Road

We were puzzled earlier tonight. It seemed that, for no reason whatsoever, all of a sudden the volume on our TV would get increased to the maximum. The Mute button on the remote control wouldn’t work, and when we tried to turn the volume down with the remote control and by hand, it wouldn’t stay down.

So we’d have to turn the TV off and turn it back on. That seemed to work. For a little while.

Jennie and I were trying to figure out what was going on. It seemed as though someone else had control of our TV. We speculated that it was because the TV was 10 years old.

And then I got up and walked around the coffee table:

Yesterday I disconnected our digital cable box and our cable modem. I put the remote control for the cable box with this stuff. It appears that the remote control can still control our TV, even though it’s not connected with the digital cable box anymore. I saw that the cable modem was sitting on the remote control, pressing the TV and Volume control.

Whew. And we were thinking that Otis, our house ghost, was back. What? I just heard a sound from somewhere in the apartment.

Hungry Lucy Releases "Before We Stand…We Crawl" under Creative Commons License

Mood:
Listening to:

Watching:

Hungry Lucy, the “Trip-Pop” duo, whose music has been featured on several podcasts, including “Dave’s Lounge“, “The Chillcast with Anji Bee“, and “Journey Inside My Mind“, along with Public Radio programs such as “Echoes” and “Audiosyncracies”, has decided to try something different with their latest release, “Before We Stand… We Crawl”.

From the Hungry Lucy website:

In a move that’s part social experiment, and part commentary on the bizarre tactics of the mainstream music industry, Hungry Lucy are releasing “Before We Stand … We Crawl” under Creative Commons license. In a nutshell, this license allows listeners to share these songs with friends and know that the band is on their side. In fact, the staunchly independent Hungry Lucy is encouraging their fans to make copies of the EP and spread it around.

I’ve already heard some of this music on podcasts, and I look forward to playing it very soon on the Journey Inside My Mind. Hungry Lucy: intoxicating trip-pop music with enchanting female vocals. Nice.

Welcome Bene Diction Blogs On Readers!

Mood: elated and slightly tired
Listening to: a program on PBS about Lucille Ball
Reading: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5), with Keisha – just finished ch. 3

Bene Diction, the Official Canuck of Journey Inside My Mind, writes (my links):

Journey Inside My Mind has found his niche. Dan – you are a natural at podcasting. And thanks for introducing us to Ganns Dean (Superblessed) music, which I think is very cool.

Ganns is the Official Superblessed Blogger of Journey Inside My Mind, you may recall.

I’ll be doing the 60th episode this coming weekend, and I realized a short while ago that I’ve almost been doing this for an entire year. Please check out the show, and leave feedback – good, bad, and ugly.

Update: It looks like Ganns is up at the Podsafe Music Network as of today. I think that’s supercool because he’s got the potential to get played by podcasters from all over the world now, not just my little show! ;)

Some inadvertent errors in speech or things otherwise miscommunicated during this episode:

  • blue number nine (bn9) does not list Natives of the New Dawn(NoND) among their influences, although they might consider them. I just ran out of time as I started talking about NoND.
  • I did feel like punching the thieves but would opt not to if I found out (I hope)

Chalk this up to recording the show in the wee wee hours of the morning, when I could/should have been sleeping.

Thanks to Jon from the Tanfastic podcast (also from the Stars Hollow podcast)for the show opener and to the Official Mom for the closing comments!

Make it a great week, and send in your feedback!

Journey Inside My Mind on PodShow+

Mood: sleepy
Listening to: JIMM 58 – Happy Birthday Keisha!
Eating: fish and salad
Watching: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)

It looks like PodShow+ has recognized my podcast, probably since it’s registered with the Podsafe Music Network. I haven’t opted to migrate everything to the PodShow Delivery Network – still counting the cost on that.

Update: after looking at what else is in my collection now, I think my show arrived there because the OPML import finally worked.

Debt Collectors forcing people into bancruptcy

Mood: pleasant
Listening to: Accident Hash #162
Eating: apple and a pop tart – at least one of them is healthy

Clark Howard reports:

Collectors scaring people into bankruptcy

If you owe a debt to a credit card company and that company uses an in-house collector, that bank can use any tactic to come after you. Aside from harming you physically or threatening to put you in jail, in –house bank collectors can do just about anything to get the money you owe. It’s a special exemption under the rules of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. But most debts are turned over to third party companies who use these threatening tactics even though it’s illegal for them to do so. As a result, people are getting scared into filing bankruptcy. Clark saw a sign the other day, saying “Bankruptcy Is Still An Option.” That’s a step most people don’t need to take, but these creditors convince people there is no other way. It’s best to honor your debts and pay them a soon as you are on your feet. But according to the FDCPA, collectors must follow these rules:

  1. A collector cannot call you after you’ve told them not to do so.
  2. A collector cannot call you at work.
  3. A collector cannot tell other people about your debt.
  4. A collector cannot threaten you (with court, jail or other).

And lastly, please don’t ever give a collector your bank account information or give them post-dated checks. You want a written agreement about how the debt will be paid before you pay a cent.
