Pardon the dust…

I’m moving this domain to a different registrar, so things may or may not appear wonky over the next few days.  This website may or may not be available.  But it will be back.

P.S. I still haven’t forgotten that I owe you a 5th anniversary show. Been thinking about the music and what else I want to include in it.

Hit me up in the usual social channels if you’d like.

New Voicemail and Fax Number!

Posted in administrivia, announcements on December 8th, 2008 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Ah, remember those good ol’ K7 days? No? Remember that 206-666-JIMM phone number I used to have, and how you used to call occasionally and leave messages I’d play on the podcast?  Well, something happened to that number, and I haven’t had a voicemail line for some time.

Until today.

Prompted by the Official Commentator of the Journey Inside My Mind, Ed Ovett from Ed’s Mixed Bag, I got a new voicemail/fax line. I’m branding the phone line as the “voicemail line for Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Jazzmania Productions”, so that I can use it for my other new media projects as well.

So, without further ado, the voicemail/fax number for Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Jazzmania Productions is

+1-206-339-8030

Enter that number in your phone and call it regularly. Especially if you have a comment for the Journey Inside My Mind.

Update: This number has also faded. Please use the Contact page to get in touch.

Help! I’ve been trying to access category and archive pages and keep getting error messages, stating that the pages don’t exist.  Troublesome.  Is this happening to you?

Try this: click on the Categories dropdown and select a category.  Then select a month in the Archives dropdown.

Any of you using WordPress have this happen? Do you have any advice or tips?

Time for a theme update

I’m at the point where I’m ready to move away from the default WordPress theme to something with more pizzazz.  Since this website is about the Journey Inside My Mind, which includes music, musings, and the like, I have to believe that there are some themes available that can help bring this out.  Do you have any suggestions? Feel free to leave them in the comments.

Six years later and the move to hosted WordPress

Posted in administrivia, plans on August 20th, 2008 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Maybe you noticed on danieljohnsonjr.com that I’m moving to WordPress. If not, here’s a heads-up.

I’ve played around with free hosting since I first set up my GeoCities site back in 2002. I still have “Dan’s Links” set up as my home page on my browser. (Stop laughing. It’s worked for me. ;P)

I’ve got me some web hosting and am slowly working my way in moving my blogs to hosted WordPress. I’m having to learn about nameservers and public_html, Fantastico, and all that fun stuff. But I’m really looking forward to playing with PHP and MySQL, since I’ve done a lot of SQL Server development for work.

If things here appear a bit wonky for awhile, that’s why. Also, if you’d like to offer some free advice during the transition, feel free to leave it in the comments, or contact me through the usual channels.

Retrospective – Year-to-date and prior-year snapshots

Posted in administrivia, zeitgeist on July 5th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

From time to time, especially since I’ve been blogging for awhile, I like to look back through the archives of my blogs. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this for Journey Inside My Mind. Can you believe I’ve been doing this for 5-1/2 years? A lot of content since that first post back in January 2002.

Starting off by going back each month of 2007 so far:

Here’s what happened as we go back a year at a time during this blog’s history:

Have you found anything from the archives that you’d like brought back up to the surface? Let me know, and I’ll share it with the rest of the group here.

A Trip Through the Archives

I just twittered:

hey bloggers! when was the last time you browsed through your archives to see what you talked about 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years ago?

and I was immediately reminded that it’s been awhile since I did that myself. So, here goes:

The new media playground is like jazz

Posted in administrivia, blogging, music, new media playground, podcast, projects, twitter on June 6th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Mood: upbeat
Listening to: Managing the Gray: Every Day is a Good Day
Reading: Learning XML, Second Edition
Eating: an apple

I checked my Bloglines and noticed that C.C. Chapman mentioned my name on his latest episode and the Journey Inside My Mind Blog in the shownotes, specifically with an audio comment about how the new media playground is a lot like jazz:

“Do not fear mistakes; there are none.” – Miles Davis.

A lot of jazz music usually involves improvisation within the boundaries of a chord progression. The song starts off, usually with the melody. Then different instruments take their solos, which usually fall within the same chord progression as the melody. Eventually everyone comes back together to wrap up the song.

I’m probably grossly oversimplifying things with that description, especially when you consider trendsetters like Miles Davis, who through constantly reinventing himself, created new boundaries and genres of jazz music (Check out this post from 2003 for more information: Paving the Milestones).

I like to think that’s what it’s like with what we’re doing with new media.

New Look for the Journey Inside My Mind Blog

Posted in administrivia, blogging on February 26th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Howdy. Last night I upgraded the Journey Inside My Mind Blog layout to better make use of the good stuff from the latest version of Blogger. I’m not finished, as I need to get my Twitter stuff on here, and I want to present the labels in a cloud, instead of the alphabetical list you see now.

Update: I have implemented label clouds on all my upgraded blogs; namely

One Big JIMM Podcast Feed

Posted in administrivia, music, podcast on February 16th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

This is either going to work smoothly or really get messed up. I have created a master feed of all the Journey Inside My Mind Podcast episodes and have just redirected the FeedBurner URL to pull from that feed. No need to update your subscriptions, but you may find a bunch of new episodes in your podcatching software. I hope not, though.

I described the rationale behind this in the earlier article, “Working on new, custom RSS feed for JIMM Podcast“. One big reason is so that the show can get listed in the various popular podcast directories, including the iTunes Music Store. I guess I thought that it would automatically get discovered by iTunes, but I’ve now learned that wasn’t the case. I have since submitted the feed to be listed, and I’m looking forward to being able to share the news that the show is listed in that directory.

I’ve just updated the layout for QuotesBlog. It had been almost an entire year since the site had been updated, according to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine page. Below is the recent layout:

Working on new, custom RSS feed for JIMM Podcast

Posted in administrivia, podcast on February 11th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

I could seriously go back to bed right now. I got pleasantly distracted yesterday with the idea of creating my own RSS feed for the Journey Inside My Mind Podcast.

Right now, FeedBurner is creating the feed from whatever Blogger puts on the front page. I had initially set up the blog to show 999 posts per page, so that everything would be on the front page and therefore also in the feed. After about 50 episodes or so, it was taking too long for the page to load, so I opted to limit the number to the last 50 episodes per page.

I recently was reminded that Rob at podcast411 has a tutorial on how to create an RSS feed by hand. That got me thinking that I could have, at a minimum, feeds with 50 episodes in them at a time. That way, new listeners could subscribe to it and then easily be able to pick up some of the older episodes, some of which are my personal favorites.

I think I will opt instead to use this feed for everything. It is a small task to maintain this with every episode that gets released, and it will always redirect subscribers back to the main page.

So I spent over 6 hours yesterday getting the first 55 episodes into the new feed. I’m currently up to 79 episodes, so it’s just a bit more work to get them into the master feed.

Then I get to work with the FeedBurner folks to redirect the podcast feed from the original Atom feed on the blog to this new feed. I’ve heard about it done from other podcasters, and it appears to be seamless.

I may opt to record the episode for this coming week today or continue assembling the rest of the episodes into the new RSS feed.

Blog Makeovers

Posted in administrivia, blogging, history on February 10th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

You may or may not have noticed some changes recently to this blogs and others I produce since I migrated them over to the new Blogger; namely that posts have categories/labels associated with them, so that you can see what else I’ve posted in the related categories.

Well, I up and redid the way Get That Job! looks. I completely redid the template and layout, and I must say, the change looks better. I hope to freshen up the look of all my blogs in the near future.

I recently found out that the Internet Archive has a Wayback Machine, where you can see how websites have changed over time. For example, you can see various incarnations of journeyinsidemymind.com since September 2002. Check it out.
