Frustrations with hearing impairment show need for sensitivity

Posted in children, deaf_hoh, family, life lessons, parenting, twitter on March 17th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Earlier I made this post on Twitter:

*!$% hearing impairments! Ugh. So frustrating sometimes!

Then I put my daughter to bed, cooling off a little bit. I returned and decided I should post again:

Clarification on my last Twitter: I’m just frustrated at hearing impairment. Ppl who know me understand that we deal with it every day

Now the real back story. Earlier as I was trying to get her into bed, different things kept coming up to hinder that. Then as she was getting her bed ready, I was in the living room, and she called out. She needed a pillow because hers were in the dryer.

So I told her to get one from our bedroom. She apparently didn’t hear me – go figure. So I called out a bit louder for her to get one from our bedroom. Again – so I basically called out as loud as I could for her to hear.

A few minutes later I went to her room to tuck her in, and she had this hurt expression on her face. “I don’t like when you yell at me,” she said.

That’s what I meant by hating the frustration of hearing impairment. I need to remind myself constantly that I practically need to be in the same room as Keisha in order for her to hear me; especially when she has her hearing aids out at night. If I’m going to be sensitive, I need to make this kind of effort.

I have written about our experiences with deafness and hearing impairment a lot in this blog, but I’d love to know what you have to say.

The Official Canuck Signs Off

Posted in blogging, children, officials on October 18th, 2005 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – 4 Comments

Just as when a good friend says goodbye in person, so I feel pangs knowing that a great friend in the blogosphere for the past three years has decided to stop blogging:

I first “met” the blogger, who for personal reasons, has used the pseudonym “Bene Diction”, three years ago, when this blog was originally included among the first “blogs4God“. Bene Diction was a moderator for the Zines category, and would often check in, leave a comment, or refer back to my QuotesBlog.

Since that time, Bene Diction became the Official Canuck of Journey Inside My Mind, and we’d keep in touch.

It’s sad to say goodbye, so I’d rather say “good journey”. And I hope and look forward to seeing you in person on the other side.

Golden Silence Around Our Home

Posted in children, deaf_hoh on May 4th, 2005 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

It’s been kinda quiet around our home for the past few days:

Jennie has had laryngitis since Saturday afternoon. As we were shopping on Sunday afternoon, Keisha remarked that she felt like she was losing her voice.

“I can only hope,” I said to Jennie, jokingly.

In order to communicate, Jennie has had to use sign language. When we were driving on Sunday, I couldn’t watch her and the road at the same time – contrary to what you might think. We had Keisha, who is hard-of-hearing, interpret so that I could concentrate on the road. It wound up be pretty effective.

Now, as Jennie’s voice is returning, she’s sounding like Don Vito Corleone from “The Godfather”. When she calls, she says stuff like, “I need $600 under the table, or you’ll need to get ready for the 24/7 dirt nap.”

Computer and Car Drama

Posted in children, computing on June 2nd, 2004 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Greetings once again from the library! Yesterday I spent some time toying with the home PC. Our 19″ monitor had gone out, so I plugged in a 13- or 15-inch one a friend gave us. It appears to be working okay, except that I have to use 800×600 resolution now. Also the buttons that stretch the screen vertically and horizontally are stuck right now. Fortunately, this happened after I got the screen to a decent size!

We also have an HP All-in-One printer/scanner/copier/fax, and it has been behaving badly. I replaced the black ink cartridge, and now it incessantly tells us that we need to insert/reinsert the color ink cartridge. We’ll need to wait awhile to purchase a new color cartridge to see if that works, but for now, it exists as a nice paperweight.

The big reason for the home PC activity is that we’re having to get temp tags and insurance for the car Mom has given us, a 1983 Datsun Maxima. It had been registered and insured in her name during the past year.

On Saturday I called around and got Jennie and I a 6-month policy for the car. I don’t know whether the car will last that long, but we’ll see. We need to have proof of insurance documents in order to get temporary license tags, so I asked the representative to fax us the documents.

Needless to say, they didn’t come through. Yesterday I saw that the PC had QuickLink, some faxing software that came with it. We’d never used it before, but I figured it was worth trying out.

Jennie called the folks at the insurance company this morning, and they faxed the documents to our PC. I was then able to save them to a diskette to bring to the library to print out. Unfortunately, they won’t come up in any of the office applications.

I think we’ll have to return home, save the documents in a more ubiquitously-known file format, and then come back here to the library to print them out.
