Three Male Dogs – JOKE ALERT!

Posted in dog, humor, jokes on July 16th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – 4 Comments

Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female Poodle.

The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time.

The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return.

Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, “The first one who can use the words ‘liver’ and ‘cheese’ together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me.”

The sturdy, muscular black Lab speaks up quickly and says, “I love liver and cheese.”

“Oh, how childish,” said the Poodle. “That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever.”

She turns to the tall, shiny Golden Retriever and says “How well can you do?”

“Um. I HATE liver and cheese,” blurts the Golden Retriever.

“My, my,” said the Poodle. “I guess it’s hopeless. That’s just as dumb as the Lab’s sentence.”

She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, “How about you, little guy?”

The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell Chihuahua.

He gives her a smile, a sly wink, turns to the Golden Retriever and the Lab and says,

“Liver alone. Cheese mine.”

Monday Morning Musings

Posted in dog, God, mental, neighborhood on June 4th, 2007 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – 2 Comments

I woke up this morning and was about to get ready for work when our dog Jake came in to “ask” if I’d take him outside for a walk. I said, “Sure, what the heck. Even if it’s just 15 minutes around the block. It would be great for you and me to spend some time with God, too.”

Our apartment complex has a lot of trees, and as I walk the dog in the morning, I hear birds from all over the place with their morning songs. Squirrels, too. And we even have a duck pond with ducks who often spend time outside the pond area. Geese, too, but they prefer to keep to themselves.

It’s really interesting around spring as we see ducklings and goslings being born, and the protective nature of their parents in action.

For me, in the morning, as I walk the dog, I’m reminded more of God’s beauty and creativity. I love how he manages this small area of the universe so well, and I marvel that I get to enjoy it.

I’ve often used these walks in the morning to talk with God about my own anxieties, concerns, worries, etc. I realize that I’m not meant to be that way, but that it’s really God’s intent and purpose for me that I pour these things out to him. He is able to work so many things out, even the bad things that happen.

Most of the time I pray for my own heart and character to be changed, so that I can more readily handle what is going on. Not from an endurance perspective, but I prefer to have a warrior mindset about the things going on in my life.

If you read the older posts, you’ll find that I’ve often struggled with depression and anxiety. I think some of the ways I’ve tried to cope with it is to not get too emotionally involved with what’s going on around me. As I type that, I see of course that’s not the right thing to do, and so I’ve prayed for God to help me be in touch with all that’s going on around me and not to shrink back from problems and obstacles, but to face them head on.

Just some things I’m thinking about as I head into the new day and week.

Community-wide Yard Sale and a Personal Dog Walk

Posted in apartment, dog, neighborhood on May 20th, 2006 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Mood: restless
Listening to: Teknikal Diffikulties – comedy sketch podcast
Eating: plain bagel with spread, orange juice, 2 small frappacino (sp?) mochas, and 1 beef jerky stick (see below)

Our apartment complex is having a yard sale. Members of the community have signed up for “booths” to sell, buy, trade, whatever. Jennie signed us up yesterday, I think. The sale has been going on since 8:30 this morning and will continue until 4 PM. Most of what we’re selling is Keisha’s old toys, but there is some of our stuff in the mix, too:

Our booth is situated right where Keisha’ bus stop is, and it’s close to the entrance of the duck pond. Having ducks and geese in the neighborhood is a double-edged sword: it adds character, but it also adds mess. Specifically, we have to be on the lookout for duck and geese poop on the sidewalks and streets where we walk.

Jennie came home from work this morning, packed up the stuff we were selling, and went to the booth. I stayed in bed for another couple of hours and finally decided it was time to get up. I feel like I’ve slept so much these past few days, and I needed to get out of the home. Jake needing his walk also was a motivating factor. I got up, put my contacts in, got dressed, and put three plastic bags in my pocket. I put Jake’s leash on him, and I began our walk.

I’ve taken Jake to the food mart near the local fire station before. It’s only a few minutes’ drive, but it’s a good half hour walk. One way, that is. I brought three plastic bags because I know that if I take Jake for that long of a walk, there’s a good chance I’ll need them, to pick up after he relieves himself. And it’s a good thing I did.

Once we got to the food mart, I tied Jake up to a telephone pole and went inside. He was very well-behaved; didn’t bark or whine at all. I went inside and got 2 Starbucks frappacino(sp?) mochas and two beef jerky sticks that were a quarter apiece. One of them I shared with Jake, the other one was mine. Then we came back home.

Right now my right ear feels completely clogged, and I’m still feeling congested, but I’m going to head down to relieve Jennie so that she can come home and get some sleep.

I might bring this laptop with me so that I do some work on this week’s podcast. Yes, I’m still planning on releasing one. Maybe one with very little talk, since I don’t have my usual voice. We’ll see.

Guitar and Kong Ball

Guitar

Keisha has wanted a guitar for her birthday for quite some time. A few weeks ago, while grocery shopping, Jennie and I spotted it at a somewhat reasonable price at Meijer. Today we returned to to some more grocery shopping and check to see whether the guitar was still there.

After getting the groceries, Keisha and I went over to look at board games while Jennie picked out a birthday card for her. We wound up getting Clue and math game called 4-Way.

I sent Jennie and Keisha to go pick up some beer, which we had “forgotten”. It was really a diversionary tactic to allow me to go get the guitar without Keisha seeing me. We agreed to meet by the checkout lanes.

I got a student guitar, a strap, some picks, extra strings, and an instruction booklet with a CD. Then I went to the U-Scan checkout and paid for the stuff.

I guess it was because I had to wait to use the U-Scan for some time that Jennie and Keisha spotted me. Keisha inevitably saw the guitar. I put the guitar stuff in the truck, hiding it with some camp chairs, and then I returned.

When I found Keisha and Jennie, Keisha asked me where the guitar was. I told her that I didn’t have the cash now to pay for it. Obviously, since I’d just paid for it. It was another diversionary tactic. She was disappointed, but we’d talked about it earlier in the week, so she was able to deal with it.

We got home, brought our groceries inside, and realized that we didn’t get some waffles, which Keisha had wanted for her birthday breakfast. Seeing an opportunity to get the guitar stuff out of the trunk, Jennie told Keisha that they would head back out to get them. Before they left, I decided to take our dog Jake outside, and I got the guitar stuff out, went around the building, and waited for them to leave.

After sufficient time had passed, Jake and I, guitar stuff in hand, went inside. I took the guitar out, tuned it, and played a few chords on it. I stowed it under our bed before the ladies returned.

Kong Balls

I’d first heard about Kong balls on the Bob and Tom Show. When we went to Jungle Jim’s last week, we bought one for Jake. We put some peanut butter in it last week, and he just loved it.

When Keisha and Jennie returned from their small errand this evening, they had bought some “Scooby Snacks”. What a great opportunity, I thought, to use the Kong ball! I broke two of them in half, and I put them in the Kong ball. Then I rolled it over to Jake.

He was preoccupied with it for about 20 minutes, and I think he’s now taking a break out of frustration.

Saturday to the Full

Posted in Bible, college, deaf_hoh, dog, movies on June 26th, 2005 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – 2 Comments

Saturdays usually are pretty busy, and today was no exception:

Jake Walk

This morning, after Jennie came home from work, I slept a little while longer. Then I woke up and took Jake for a walk.

When I take Jake for walks on Saturdays, we have made it a tradition to walk from our apartment to the Galbraith Food Mart and back. It winds up being a good walk, and Jake usually does his business about three times. I usually stop at the food mart and get a drink.

Today, however, I stopped at the drive-thru next door to the food mart. The main reason for this is because, when I go inside the food mart, I have to tie Jake up to the telephone pole outside, since I can’t take him inside. I was able to walk Jake inside the drive-thru, and I got my drink from there.

Fun in the Sun at the Pool

When Jake and I returned home, Keisha was awake. I asked her, since Jennie was still sleeping, if she wanted to go swimming. I haven’t been to the pool that much since it opened on Memorial Day – maybe three times. Keisha enthusiastically said yes, and we got ready to leave.

Since it was going to be a bright, sunny day, I made sure we loaded up on the sunscreen. She put some on my back, and I put some on hers. We made sure to get our feet, face, and ears.

When we arrived at the pool, we found a mom and her two kids already there. Other than that, we had the pool to ourselves. The water was refreshing – not too cold and not too warm.

Keisha had brought a frisbee, and we played with that for a bit. Since it floated, I went underwater a few times and came up with it on my head. I’d pretend that I didn’t know what was going on, to have fun with the kids.

I also had brought a quarter, and we played hide and seek with it for a while. Neither Keisha nor Josie would go underwater, and Josie’s brother Tate was wearing an inflatable vest that kept him afloat. Josie was able to slide the quarter along the bottom of the pool, over to the steps, with her feet. Then she was able to get the quarter up the bottom step with her feet. I was impressed.

Then there was a time when it appeared that I was on a one-man mission to empty the pool of all its water. I’d jump into the deep end and make a big splash, mostly with “Preacher Seats”, but one time with a “Cannonball”.

Home for Some Food – Physical and Spiritual

After awhile, Keisha and I returned home, changed our clothes, and ate some brunch. She had the cinnamon raisin bagel with strawberry cream cheese, and we each had a chicken pot pie. We also split the last pudding cup.

While we ate, we went through a “Sticky Situation” in this book we’ve been reading. It was a situation involving a boy on a camping trip, who found out he needed to do the dinner dishes. It was a pretty hefty job, and his counselor had asked the cleanup crew who wanted to be the “chief washer”. We were presented with three choices. Keisha intuitively picked the right one, but we read in the Bible in John 13:3-5, in which Jesus washes the disciples’ feet.

We talked about the kinds of dirty jobs around our home, in our community, and at church. We discussed the consequences of those jobs not getting done. Then, Keisha cleared the dishes – the “dirty job” she decided she wanted to do.

Turtle Talk and Nature Walk

At 2 PM Keisha and I went to Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve, which is just up the street from us. They were giving a “Turtle Talk”, and there would be an interpreter there for deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

The turtle talk was very interesting indeed. Afterward, Keisha and I went to the gift shop and bought our Hamilton County Park pass – it only costs $5, and it lets you get into any Hamilton County Park.

After we left the gift shop, we walked for a little bit on the trail. We stopped by the drinking fountain, and I noticed that they had a separate drinking fountain attached to it, with a spigot that led to a bowl that was obviously for pets to get a drink, too.

As we walked down the path, a woman spotted us, and she called out, “Are you Jennie’s husband? I recognize her in Keisha.”

It turns out that this woman went to high school with Jennie, and we’d met her and her husband about 5 years ago at a conference in Columbus for parents with deaf and hard of hearing children. She gave me her phone number, and I told her that I’d have Jennie call her when we got back home.

Reading, Watching, Snacking, Resting

When we got home, Keisha put on an Arthur video we’d checked out from the library, “Parents are from Pluto”. I pulled the comforter off our bed and grabbed a pillow. Then I laid it on the floor. Before we watched the video, however, Keisha brought out the “Charlotte’s Web” book we’ve been reading. We read a couple of chapters and then watched the video. Keisha popped some popcorn in the microwave, so we shared that, too. Along with the frozen fruit pops and cups of water she’d brought out.

Family Time at LaRosa’s

After a little while, Jennie came out, after talking with her old school friend. We decided to use a LaRosa’s coupon Keisha’s 1st grade teacher had given her for completing the 1st grade. Jennie also brought the seasonal coupon magazine.

We decided to go to the LaRosa’s on Boudinot Street. When we arrived there, I saw a plaque that mentioned that this particular store was the orginal LaRosa’s that Buddy LaRosa had opened in 1954. Very impressive, as was a lot of the memorabilia throughout the store.

For example, in the men’s restroom are framed copies of old menus from different time periods in the store’s history. Also, along one of the walls are some cartoon salutes to local sports legends – high school, college, and otherwise.

The Johnson Family Explorers

After we ate dinner, we decided to do some exploring. I proceeded down Boudinot to Glenway. Glenway to Race. Race to Gaines. Gaines to Sheed. And so forth. We wound up driving throughout that section of Western Hills, Colerain Township, and Springfield Township. As I drove, Jennie navigated with our map, calling out street names as I would pass them.

We stopped at the Dairy Mart at Hamilton and Houston to use the restroom. Then Jennie and I got coffees while Keisha got a frozen drink. Then we proceeded home.

It was a very eventful day.

Welcome Home, Zoe!

Posted in dog, ohio, sickness on April 30th, 2005 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

We have a new member of our family:

The Need, the Prayer, and the Answer

Yesterday Jennie called me at work. A family in our church was moving, and they were not able to take their cat Zoe with them. The family was moving today (Saturday), and they urgently needed to find a good home for their cat.

I said okay. I’ve never been a cat person, but I think that God has been changing my heart lately. Besides, Keisha has been praying for a cat for some time, and what a great opportunity this was to see her prayers being answered.

We got directions to their place – just across the Ohio River in Kentucky. When we called later that evening to see if we could pick her up last night, the owners said that they couldn’t find her. It was obvious that Zoe knew something was going on. We agreed to call back later to see if they found her. They did, and we drove last night to get Zoe. The owners gave us her litter box, toys, food supplies, and carrying crate.

Jake, Meet Zoe
As soon as we arrived home, Jake knew something was going on. He was just curious about what was in the carrying crate, but Zoe, who is normally shy, was terrified – as evidenced by her repeated hissing.

We sent Jake to his bed, and Keisha and I brought Zoe into her (Keisha’s) bedroom. We let her out, and she looked around. Then, when we opened Keisha’s bedroom door, Zoe raced out and hid under our bed.

Gone Into Hiding – For Now

That’s where she’s been for most of her short time at our place. Except for at 3 AM this morning. I was asleep, but all of a sudden I heard some meowing, and I looked over to see that Zoe had crawled out from under our bed to look around. I tapped my chest to see if she would hop on the bed, which she did. I petted her for a little while, and then she hopped back down and crawled back under the bed.

We Still Love Our Jake

In one sense we are glad that Jake is bigger than he was when he was a puppy. He used to be able to crawl under the bed, too. Now, he can only fit his head under the bed, which he’s done here and there, to check on the new animal that is in our home. This also has meant that he’s a bit more eager for our affection. The slightest hint that we want him to come over yields a flurry of exuberance.

Smells Like Dog Poop

Posted in apartment, christmas, deaf_hoh, dog, music, ohio, sickness, thanksgiving on November 26th, 2004 by Daniel Johnson, Jr. – Be the first to comment

Yesterday we spent Thanksgiving with some friends from church who live in Springfield, Ohio. I’d taken Jake our dog outside before we left so that he could relieve himself, but he didn’t poop.

I knew that we would be gone a long time, and I didn’t want Jake to have an accident in our apartment, so I put him in his cage (what we call his ‘bed’).

Fast forward seven hours… we return and find that he had gotten out of his bed. Did I fasten the door securely? I guess not. I inspected our apartment. Fortunately, Jake hadn’t left us any “presents”.

I took him outside for a walk, and he pooped, to my relief. I brought him back inside, and we got ready for bed. Since one of the local radio stations has changed their format to all Christmas music for the season, Keisha kept her hearing aids on so that she could listen to it while she fell asleep.

About an hour later, I got up to take Keisha’s hearing aids out so that her ears could get some rest. I thought she’d taken them out and put them on the floor, and I bent down to pick it up.

It wasn’t a hearing aid. As I walked down the hall to the main bathroom, I realized

that I had a piece of dog poop in my hand! I flushed it down the toilet and washed my hands really well with antibacterial soap. Then I returned to Keisha’s room, this time turning her light on. I saw that there were other pieces on the floor. I was so upset.

I took Keisha’s hearing aids out and placed them on the window sill next to her bed. Then I went to our bedroom, where Jake was laying in his cage. I grabbed him by his collar and drug him to Keisha’s room, showing him that he’d been a bad dog.

I then grabbed a wad of toilet paper from the bathroom to pick up the rest of the poop. I flushed it down the toilet and got some carpet cleaner for the floor. After all of this, I returned to our bedroom, and I made certain to lock Jake in his cage for the night.

The next morning, as I let him out of his cage, I told him I wanted him to be a good dog. And I let him outside to go poop. Which he did.
