As we make the journey of our lives, it is not uncommon to find ourselves needing to put aside certain things in order to make other things better. In situations like these, it is okay to give up doing that one thing.

I started the Journey Inside My Mind blog in January 2002. I started the podcast in August 2005. This project, like so many others, has been highly experimental and without much more of a purpose except to provide a vehicle for me to be introspective and explore things creatively. I always wanted to be a DJ ever since my Dad showed me how to splice tape together and make mixtapes myself.

When I started the podcast in August 2005, I did it to get some things out as well as to promote some independent music I found myself enjoying. For awhile the show came out weekly. After some time the show came out less frequently as other things began. In 2009 only 9 official episodes – including this one – have come out. I expect the same to be the case in the future. While I have posted several “Another Rest Stop in the Journey” audio posts – which has made it easy to keep in touch, I find myself at a crossroads.

In the past year, you have shared with me as I’ve mentioned New Media Cincinnati and How I Got My Job.  Both of these projects, as well as my ongoing search for employment, are making it difficult to make this show the best it can be. I think it’s time for me to focus my energy and efforts where I think I can make it count.

Through this blog and podcast, I’ve been able to make some great connections with others, and these have carried over into other areas, both online and offline. I’d like to say thanks to the Association of Music Podcasting (AMP) for their support and encouragement. I’d also like to say thanks to the 5 of you who have remained subscribed to the feed, either by email or podcast subscription (*wink, wink*). I’m not going to start naming off names, because I know I will undoubtedly forget someone.

So, let’s consider episode 122 (mp3, 29:43, 27.3 MB) the last official podcast episode over here until further notice. And remember, we’re not saying goodbye here. The journey itself will continue; just not so much on this blog and podcast. So let’s just say, “Good journey.”

Free publicity! Call this number!

I’m about to record episode 115 of the Journey Inside My Mind podcast, but I’d love to open it up for you to plug your own website. In addition, it gives me a little more content. This next episode will be a Super Mix, meaning that there won’t be much of me talking in between tracks, more like a mixtape.

Daniel Johnson, Jr. from CincinnatiI’m always on the lookout for “shout-outs“, so here’s the opportunity for you to get some free publicity for yourself and your website:

  1. Call +1 -206-339-8030
  2. When prompted, leave a message in the following format:
“Hi, this is [YOUR NAME HERE] from [YOUR WEBSITE ADDRESS], and you’re listening to the Journey Inside My Mind podcast with Cincinnati’s Own, Daniel Johnson, Jr.”

That’s it!  I’ll get an email with the voicemail message in it, and then I’ll play it on the show.  In return, I’ll also provide a link in the shownotes for the next episode, which I will be recording to release this weekend.

Sound like fun? Now, go make that call!

New Voicemail and Fax Number!

Ah, remember those good ol’ K7 days? No? Remember that 206-666-JIMM phone number I used to have, and how you used to call occasionally and leave messages I’d play on the podcast?  Well, something happened to that number, and I haven’t had a voicemail line for some time.

Until today.

Prompted by the Official Commentator of the Journey Inside My Mind, Ed Ovett from Ed’s Mixed Bag, I got a new voicemail/fax line. I’m branding the phone line as the “voicemail line for Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Jazzmania Productions”, so that I can use it for my other new media projects as well.

So, without further ado, the voicemail/fax number for Daniel Johnson, Jr. and Jazzmania Productions is

+1-206-339-8030

Enter that number in your phone and call it regularly. Especially if you have a comment for the Journey Inside My Mind.

Update: This number has also faded. Please use the Contact page to get in touch.

JIMM 16 on the Soundseeing Podcast!

Hey everybody! I recently submitted episode 16 of the Journey Inside My Mind podcast to Dave, who puts out the Soundseeing Podcasts site. He also is one of the main characters of the Audio Collective podcast, which I’ve been subscribed to for some time.

Dave has posted that episode at the Soundseeing Podcasts site, and you can find the link here:

Soundseeing Podcasts >> JIMM 16 – The Cheryl Dawson Memorial Walk-a-thon

As Dave puts it:

This Soundseeing tour depicts The Cheryl Dawson Memorial Walk-a-thon. It is not done as a normal soundseeing tour where the surroundings are described. This one is portrayed through the voices of those that attended. It is an interesting way to do a soundseeing tour and also is a very moving podcast.

I’m very happy that many more people are having an opportunity to hear this podcast, to say the least.

Thoughts on the Podcasting Journey Thus Far

On my way up to work this morning, I listened to JIMM 14 – Let’s Rock! once again. I think that show is probably one of the best produced ones I’ve done thus far. Don’t get me wrong – I like the others, but I like how this one was done.

Some observations for myself:

  • Keeping it down to less than 30 minutes lets me included another podcast on my media player (limited to 60 MB). It’s not that I don’t mind hearing my own voice so much – maybe it is – as much as it is that I want to hear other podcasts, too.
  • I need to use the envelope control in Audacity to “turn down” the background music while I’m talking. It sounded like I was trying to compete with the opening music. There were certain times when it felt distracting to me as a listener. I think the envelope control is the one that lets you set control points to adjust the amplitude over a certain time frame.
  • Show preparation is key. I sounded so much together because I’d already laid out what I was going to say. Having said that, I would like to get to a point where it does sound more impromptu rather than just read from a screen. The more comfortable I am with the material, the more easily it will flow throughout the show.
  • I really like using “sweepers”; i.e., shout-outs, show identifiers, PSAs, and so forth.
  • I love being able to feature my family on the shows.
  • I like that this show, and the one prior to that one – “Jazzmania” – were centered around a particular genre of music. I may like to continue that trend with other genres, or I may like to mix it up a bit.
  • When using Audacity, save early and save often!
  • It’s going to take longer to put together a show than I initially thought. Getting the songs together is the easy part. Recording is relatively easy, as long as I know what I’m going to say. Mixing, editing, writing show notes, and publishing is what takes the most time.
  • I’m probably going to have to set up a schedule to only do one show a week until I’ve been able to achieve better balance between podcasting and the other aspects of my life. My tendency has been to be hyperfocused on that which interests me the most, neglecting everything else, which isn’t right.
  • I love getting feedback, but that cannot be the reason why I do this show.
  • Now that I’m using this blog for the podcast, do I still want to blog as usual with the same gut-level openness and honesty I’ve done in the past? I’m a bit hesitant because I don’t want to necessarily drive listeners away. It probably shouldn’t matter.

JIMM 1 – About JIMM

Play

Mood: ecstatic
Listening to: my first official podcast

4/14/2006 Update: My voice in this episode sounds “chipmunk’d” because I recorded it in 16,000 Hz whereas the recent shows are recorded at 44,100 Hz. I think all the streaming players assume the latter speed, and maybe that’s why my voice sounds so sped up. Unfortunately, the mp3 exists in the Internet Archive like this.

I’m able to hear the episode at the recorded speed by importing it into Audacity. Maybe I’ll re-do this in 44,100 Hz and post it here.

first “official” podcast of Journey Inside My Mind

Folks, this must be what it feels like – on a much smaller level – to give birth. This is the first “official” podcast of Journey Inside My Mind – 10 minutes long! Sure, I’ve done audio posts here and there, but this one at least sounds more professional:

I’ve even got a theme! In this podcast

  • I share a little bit about my blogging history, including other blogs I’ve spun off of this one
  • We listen to a wonderful song by Jennifer Helane entitled “Nice”
  • I describe some of the more unique aspects of Journey Inside My Mind; namely Guideposts, the Mooch List, and what it means to be an Official of this blog.

Now, for some props to those who helped make this episode possible:

Please leave me a comment (guidepost) or send me an e-mail to let me know what you think!

Coverville

From the About Coverville page:

Coverville is a podcast, produced three times a week, that focuses on cover songs – a new rendition of a previously recorded song. The show is produced and hosted by Brian Ibbott, in his home in Arvada, Colorado – about 10 miles West of Denver.

The show features a combination of music and information about the music, delivered in a very relaxed, informal style. On average, each show runs about 35 minutes and features six selections. Information about the performing artist, and source album is provided, along with information about the artist being covered.
